Spring has ‘finally’ arrived here in Missouri after a very long winter. Everyone seems to have an extra spring in their step; the birds are singing loudly as the sun rises in the east, and the mules spend more and more time away from the big bale and wander farther away to find the sprigs of green grass peeking through the damp earth. When they make their way back for a few bites of hay they can be found rolling in their favorite ‘mule wallows’. They all need hair cuts, and I’m sure they would welcome my help in shedding the winter hair. Their manes are all in need of trimming, and once that is done it will look like I have new mules in the pasture.
March finds me traveling again….tomorrow Loren and I are leaving early for the Kelso Select Sale in Sulphur Springs, TX. A quick check on the web for the weather forecast tells me it is to be 80 degrees there! That will be great, although the mules Loren is taking still have some long hair, they may find it a little warm.
Then the last of the month we’re off to watch Loren and Hoosier Daddy compete in Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race at Kansas City once again. This time there will only be 14 horses and one mule competing, and they will be filming for RFD-TV, which should air this fall. We will certainly publish the times/dates when the Race is to be on RFD when we learn what they are. This is always a fun time, and unfortunately we weren’t aware it was going to be open for spectators, therefore we didn’t get the word out. One of our computers crashed in February and we lost all of our email addresses, so we weren’t able to contact people via email.
Cori and Camri have been home this week for Spring break. Cori has been enjoying being at the barn and getting out to ride almost every day. I have enjoyed being with them a few times, and of course, Camri is very entertaining, and can carry on quite the conversation. As you can see in the photos below she has started a class in pompoms and baton. She has only had one lesson but had the moves to show us when she got home. She will have a recital in May….that should be interesting! I think both Cori and Cole are counting days until school is out for the summer.
I’m sure many of you are getting anxious to get out on the trail, and/or back in the show ring. There is a lot of mule/donkey events scheduled in this issue, so be sure and check out the advertisers and our calendar of events. We hope to see you at some of the summer events. I’m hoping we can afford to attend the things we want to, but I’m sure the high cost of gas and diesel is going to have a huge effect on our activities. Now, grab a curry comb and brush and catch your favorite mule or donkey….it will do you both a world of good, there is some very therapeutic about brushing a mule!
